Timescape Data Visulization

Timescape is a new platform that allows users to visualize data by telling a story through a map. Users can shift though information on the map while also seeing events near that location and how they relate to each other.

How is works is there’s a globe with the visualized information as orbs that are connect to other orbs by dashed lines. The lines show a relationship between orbs and the information that the orbs portray are anything from the actors in the area or political campaigns going on in that area. Each orbs also has a link back to the original source such as a news article.

Timescape is also a collaboration platform where users can collaborate from multiple sources which then creates a narrative map.

There is one problem that they might see with this platform is how people use it to tell their stories and what types of stories users are telling. Public versions should be available in December.

This sounds like a non-linear version of what Facebook’s Timeline is supposed to be. I don’t know anyone who actually uses their Timeline this way but I believe it was intended for users to add things like these ‘orbs’ to parts of their life in order to tell their story to their friends. This nonlinear version, though, is really interesting because it lets you show related orbs branching off of each other instead of one following the other, organized by time.
